Emancipation Day
“The first of August is a very important anniversary and public holiday in the Caribbean… It was the date finally agreed on for the legal ending of the condition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834. In later years it was associated with the granting of full freedom (‘full free’) on the first of August 1838 when Apprenticeship ended.”
